VI. Verbum autem Dei deducit nos ad Christum: is est liber ille vitae, in quo omnes inscripti et electi sunt, qui salutem aeternam consequuntur.  Sic enim scriptum est Eph. 1,4: Elegii nos in Christo ante mundi constitutionem.

verbum – word; autem – but, however; Dei - of God; deducit – leads; ad – to, towards; is – it; est – is; liber – book; ille – this; vitae – of life, in quo – in which; omnes – all; inscripti … sunt – are written; electi sunt – elected; qui – who; salutem – salvation; consequuntur – follow, reach, attain; sic – thus; enim – for; scriptum est – it is written; elegit – he has chosen; nos – us; ante – before; mundi – of the world; constitutionem – founding

VI.  But the word of God leads us to Christ: it is this book of life, in which are written and elected all who who attain eternal salvation.  For thus it is written: Eph. 1:4: He has chosen us in Christ before the founding of the world.

FC Ep. XI 6

V. Haec Dei praedestinatio non in arcano Dei consilio est scrutanda, sed in Verbo Dei in quo revelatur, quaerenda est.

haec – this; Dei – of God; praedestinatio – predestination; non – not; arcano – hidden, secret, mysterious; consilio – counsel; est scrutanda – examine, probe, scrutinize; sed – but; verbo – word; in quo – in which; revelatur – reveal;  quaerenda est – search, seek

V. This predestination of God is not to be probed in the hidden counsel of God, but it is to be sought in the word of God, in which it is revealed.

FC Ep. XI 5c

Super hanc Dei praedestinationem salus nostra ita fundata est, ut inferorum portae eam evertere nequeant, Ioh. 10, 28; Matth. 16, 18.

super – over, above, upon, concerning; hanc – this; Dei – of God; praedestinationem – predestination; salus – salvation; nostra – our; ita – thus; fundata est – founded, grounded, established; ut – so that; inferorum – of the underworld, of the lowerworld [German has Hölle - hell]; portae – gates; eam – it; evertere – overturn, overthrow, ruin, destroy; nequant – to be unable.

Upon this predestination of God our salvation is grounded, so that the gates of hell are not able to overthrow it. John 10:28; Matt. 16:18

Etenim eorum salutem procurat et ea, quae ad ipsam pertinet, disponit.

etenim – for indeed, and in fact; eorum – their (of them); salutem – salvation; procurat – procure, take care of, look after; ea – it, for it; quae – which, what; ad – to; ipsam – itself; pertinet – pertains, extends; disponit – arrange, distribute

For indeed it procures their salvation and it distributes for it, what pertains to itself [and distrbutes what pertains to itself]

FC Ep. XI 5a

IV. Praedestinatio vero seu aeterna Dei electio tantum ad bonos et dilectos filos Dei pertinet, et haec est causa ipsorum salutis.

praedestinatio – predestination; vero – truly; seu – or; aeterna – eternal; Dei – of God; electio – election; tantum – only; ad – to, towards; bonos – the good; dilectos – chosen, beloved; filios – sons [German has Kinder - children]; pertinet – pertains, extends; haec – this; causa – cause; ipsorum – their, “of them”; salutis – salvation

Truly predestation or the eternal election of God pertains only to good and beloved sons of God, and this is the cause of their salvation.

Sed praescientia Dei disponit malum et metas illi constituit, quousque progredi et quamdiu durare debeat, idque eo dirigit, ut, licet per se malum sit, nihilominus electis Dei ad salutem cedat.

sed – but; praescientia – foreknowledge; disponit – arrange, organize; malum – evil; metas – marks, measures; illi – for that; constituit - set up, errect, establish; quousque – how long, until when; progredi – go forth, advance, progress; quamdiu – how long, how far; durare – to endure, to continue; debeat – owe, ought, should; idque - and it; eo – it; dirigit - put in order, arrange; ut – so that; licet – it is permitted, it is allowed; per – through; se – itself; malum – evil; sit – is [translated as inf. following licet]; nihilominus – nevertheless; electis – for the elect; ad – for; salutem – salvation; cedat – turns out, beccomes, results

But the foreknowledge of God arranges evil and establishes marks for it, how far it should progress and how long it should continue, and that he arranges it, in order that, it allows evil to exist in itself, neverthess it results in salvation fo the elect of God.

The foreknowledge of God is not the cause, that men perish; for this they should blame themselves.

Peccatum enim ex diabolo et ex hominis prava et mala voluntate oritur.

peccatum – sin; enim – for; ex – from; diabolo – devil; hominis – of man [genitive following voluntate]; prava – crooked, distorted [adj. with voluntate]; mala – evil [adj. with voluntate]; voluntate – will; oritur – orginate, arise, to rise

For sin arises from the devil and from the crooked and evil will of man.
